S2, #3: Laugh So We Don't Cry

Memes are one of the best ways to express frustration and literally laugh so we don't cry.  There was one that took off this year that I feel like has truly expressed a lot of the frustration with the current cultural shift of the United States.  It was originally sung, and then put to some very dancy and fun music.  The contrast is pretty stark, it's truly a heavy and important topic, but I find myself singing this at random intervals because it is SO catchy.

A little less directly political, let's shift over to a favorite Drum and Bass artist of mine, Fox Stevenson.  This one is called That Choice and truly is a bop and a half.  Fast paced but with a great message and truly a great song that evokes a sense of nostalgia and disillusion (Feeling that void everyday).  Would we all be alone if we sympathized?  I thought these songs would go well together!

0674 - Morning UnderRush

Let's kick things off with a stellar track from Rhodz called Morning Rush, and the title couldn't be more fitting in this scenario.  The track feels like you are driving to work just a few minutes behind schedule and are hauling ass on the freeway to try to make up the time.  It has such a happy upbeat feel to it, added perfectly with a sense of urgency in some sequences and with a calm "GOOD MORNING" energy in other parts.
At this point everyone and their mother has heard of Undertale and no matter what their opinion on the game is, you can't deny that the music for the game was absolutely incredible.  Some of the remixes of the tracks have been horrible, but some have also been very good.  One example of one I really enjoyed was the Holder remix of Bonetrousle, its a lot faster than the original but I love the unique spin put on the song while still keeping the feel of the original.  Enjoy!

0666 - Relax Satan

First for your ears today is a chilled out trap song from Said the Sky called Book Of Us, and this one has been stuck in my head for some time!  It is a bit different from what is usually stuck up there, but the melodies are so catchy that I catch myself humming it at work.  I think you will really like this one, even if trap music isn't your favorite.
Also up to help you relax today is one of the most chilled out Drum and Bass tracks I have ever heard and it comes to us from Elka.  Games We Play is fast moving and just about the most beautiful song I have heard come out of the Drum and Bass genre in some time.  The tonality is gorgeous, the vocals are hauntingly fitting, and their is a lot of emotion in this one.  Enjoy these two chill tracks!

0625 - Let's Let Some Magic Happen

Let's start the day off with some Drum and Bass, a great way to start the day.  Mr. Magician by Subsurface is an amazing track in all regards, the vocals from Leanne Louise is just fabulous, the entire song is beautifully done, and the drop is catchy the perfect blend of melody and signature DnB style.  Give it a listen and I hope you enjoy it!

0614 - Save Me Please

I've voiced my love for Drum and Bass here before, and will continue to as long as I can keep finding great music in the genre.  I found a great track from Cuebrick called Save Me and remixed my Fliwo.  It has the fast paced D&B feel along with a great tonal sequence that was stuck in my head for some time after listening to it for the first time.  It doesn't hit as hard as a lot of the mainstream drum and bass does but it is still a killer track!

0602 - The Ceiling Needs Sleep

First up is a little funky preview for tomorrow.  From Ostberg, the track is Walkin' on the Ceiling and it has a really nice mellowed out groove to it that I really enjoy.  The track is super minimal but does a great job really making sure the few elements present do a lot for the song.  The vocals are faded and minimal, the bassline is groovy, and the rhythm is catchy as hell.
Second up is a Fox Stevenson remix of Priority One and TwoThirds' track City Needs Sleep, a track that really caught my attention.  I have loved what Fox Stevenson has done with Drum and Bass over the past few years, and remixing an already slick original from these two can only mean good things.  The remix is tonal, well put together with a really nice build and breakdown, and a big bass during the drop.  Great overall and for sure worth your attention!

0572 - Hunting for Atlantis

So I have a some songs for you all, as well as a request.  So I plan on doing a funk mix for a demo for some raves, and I need to know if there are any songs that you guys love that I should include!  The first is a Drum and Bass track from Priority One and TwoThirds called Hunted.  With vocals from Jonny Rose, this one really made me happy.  This track has amazing tonality mixed with a great groove and overall great feel.  Drum and Bass has been one of my favorite genres ever since I discovered Pendulum back in high school, and Songs like this are the reason why.
Ever since Raven, I have been keeping an eye out for new stuff from John Dahlback, and his new track does not disappoint.  Atlantis is nowhere near as intense, but it does have a lot to bring to the table.  A beautiful melody mixed with a great bass, this song really got stuck in my head fast!

0502 - GDnB

Up first today is the Matduke remix of Misun's track Eli Eli.  This is the kind of stuff that leaves me confident that Drum and Bass is going to be ok, because after pendulum broke up I was really concerned it would never recover.  Great guitar riffs that accompany the bass and the driving vocals throughout the song, great to groove to and just an overall well done song.  Enjoy this one and I will see you back here tomorrow for Funky Friday!

0493 - Return and Give

First up today is a DnB track from Dabin & Feint called When You Return.  This starts off beautifully, with great tonality, and then picks up into the DnB style that I know Feint for.  It does a phenomenal job of transitioning and managing between the Drum and Bass segments and the beautiful tonal ones better than anything I have heard in some time.  Give it a listen!

Second up is a chilled out very Michael Jackson-esk remix from Tontario of MO's track Give It To Me.  The vocals are phenomenal and really do sound like the King of Pop himself, not to mention all the other miscellaneous vocal samples sound dead on.  It for sure has a nice drive and groove to it, keeping the bass moving the whole time with great chord movement.

0458 - Bizzare Invades of Your Favorite Genre

First up today is a really unique track from Robokid called Helix.  The track took me a while to peg down because it has so many elements of so many other genres.  I'm pretty sure its DnB but it also sounds like Prog House, Electro, and a lot of other genres.  Its very happy and upbeat with a nice big bass that keeps an amazing flow throughout the entire track.  A very good an happy track that helped me get through a busy morning!
Special shout to my buddy Hunter for finding this track, it is one that I have heard but never known what it was.  The Matoma Remix of The Notorious BIG and Ja Rule's track Old Thing Back.  This song is the perfect mix of what electronic music and rap combinations could be, something amazing.  Great Tropical House vibes mixed some amazing rap, I hope to see more like this because I love the cross genre work between these two.

0447 - Drum and Face

Today we focus on Drum and Bass, the genre that got me into electronic music.  Pendulum was my first, and I really hope there is never a last.  I recently found two songs that got me really excited about the genre again.  The first is Virtual Reality by T.R.P.Y. & Far Lands.  This one I would qualify as happy Drum and Bass because the energy is so high through the whole song it uses really only high pleasing tones.  Has a great bass, adding the perfect amount to the track without smothering it.  Second up on this Drum filled Friday is a track from A Himitsu called Smile.  The beginning of this track threw me, as it comes off very cute and seemed to be going nowhere.  When the drums came in though I got excited, great synth work and chill pitching make this one a really relaxing Drum and Bass song.  Adding in some great piano as well, this one is for sure worth your time!

0353 - Beautiful Fallout

Today is all about beauty in music.  It may not be heavy and in your face but good lord is it absolutely amazing.  In the past I've called it background music, and its usually what I listen to while working or at home while trying to relax and collect myself.  The first is called Flora from Rocket Science and it just inspires such a feeling of peace and tranquility.  It also helps that the silloutte of Calvin and Hobbes is in the video for this song, just taking me back to my childhood and loving every second of it.  Kick up your feet, close your eyes, and let this track take you away.

Last Island has been on my radar ever since their remix of Porter Robinson's Fresh Static Snow (Find it here Post #0333) and this original that they bring to the table is really something special.  The Next really features some great tonality, kinda reminding me of an old 90s computer game like Midnight Rescue or something like that in space (I can't remember the game but it had talking stars) and really flows well.  Give it a listen!

Last track for today is a really beautiful and calming drum and bass track (I know those words are usually contradictory but.............stay with me, I promise this works).  Its great and driving but still maintains the usual chill themes, and catches you by surprise.  Usually DnB means in your face but this one just meshes the two genres together so incredibly well that it is up there in my favorites for chill tracks this month.  Feint, who usually is on Monstercat and known for his heavy hitters, really changes the game and perspective with this one.

0347 - Month 2 Feat. Drum and Bass

Welcome to the start of month 2 in the new series I am starting.  The chill relaxing month seemed to go really well so I am very excited to announce November's category, Drum and Bass.  I figure we should go a completely opposite direction from the last one in order to try a new experience.  So how this goes is I will list my top 5 from this category and keep it pinned to the Facebook page (Facebook group is here) and I want all of you to either make your own lists on that link or just comment with a great song that fits into the Drum and Bass category!  Lets get to the list

5. Noisia - The Tide
Dark, creepy, and just overall intense, The Tide freaks me out in a good way.  This one is really crazy, especially with the really long intro that features one of the creepiest voices that I have ever heard on a track.  Its fast, intense, and very in your face.  Overall a great track though!

4. Day One - White City
Ever since I heard this one it has been near the top of my list.  Its just a very feel good song with great deep vocals and excellent tonality throughout the entire song.

3. Tristam & Braken - Frame of Mind
I absolutely love this track.  It just struck me from the beginning.  It has stelar vocals, playing into the fast paced rhythms and mixing together extremely well.  This one just always makes me feel really good too, like it is inspiring change.

2.  Fox Stevenson - All This Time
This song has had my attention since the first time I heard of Fox Stevenson earlier this year.  He has such a great way with molding tracks to be exactly unique to his own sound and I have since fallen a bit obsessed with his every release.

1.  Pendulum - The Island Part 1 and 2
Pendulum was one of my first heavy electronic music influences.  It takes me back to high school, sitting in my friend David's basement surrounded by hookah, magic the gathering, pool, and video games while listening to this album.  Part 1 is very energetic and melodic and then Part 2 comes in and turns everything on its head in a completely creative and unexpected way.  This is still my favorite track after all these years mostly because of the sheer amazing construction of the duo, and also because it throws me back to a time where friends and good music were prevalent nearly every weekend.

0328 - Future FLow

DnB just always makes me feel good.  The mix of fast pace and the tonality gets me everytime, thats why one of my first loves in the electronic music spectrum was Pendulum.  Today's Drum and Bass track comes from Draper.  It has a very nice futuristic feel to it with a whole lot of different instruments and sounds featured.  It maintains the same chorus segment while switching up all of the lead ins and drop outs.  Overall, a really good tonal Drum and Bass Song!

Since Today's theme just became futuristic as I am writing this sentence, the next song up is an extremely chill track that has all the makings of a beautiful futuristic masterpiece.  Its smooth, has minimal invasive vocals, and overall just really has a great flow to it.  Backstroke. really did a great job with this remix, but don't take my word for it and listen to it for yourself!

0314 - Smooth as Silk

First up today is a sweet Drum and Bass track (told you there would be more) from Fox Stevenson.  Everything I have heard from Fox has been mindblowing, and I would say in my book he is the most consistent in terms of enjoyment out of every song.  This one is called Manage and sounds purely excellent.  Usually DnB doesn't fit on Funk day, but this one has such a unique feel that I think there is a little funk in there.

Second up is a suave smooth remix from Keljet of EVVY's track Collide.  I love this track, its extremely fluid, kind of in the Kygo sense of chill remixes.  This one has a funk bass line though and that gives it a very unique feel as opposed to most other relaxing remixes.  The vocals are stellar and the song never drops in terms of energy, intensity, or pure bliss.  This is one of my favorite chill/funk remixes to date.  Give it a listen and feel the energy flow through you on both of these tracks!

0263 - Help Me Figure This Out

First up is a song that I have been going back and forth about which day it fits, if any.  This one is great, but has so many different pieces that I couldn't tell if it was a banger or not.  Overall, its just an incredible song.  Fox Stevenson delivers with a really unique song that starts out really chill and then drops into a very fast paced electro song with very well chosen matching vocals.  All This Time is a really great song, plus seeing Attack on Titan art for this song the first time I heard it had me sold!

I am sure many of you have heard the song Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri.  Well I came across something a while ago and still don't really know to feel about it.  I have listened to it so many times, and still can't tell if I like it or not, so I present it to you, my loyal listeners for your opinion.  Dash Berlin and Christina Novelli recently did a cover of this beautiful track from Perri.  Let me know what you think, Seriously!

0240 - Welcome to Chill Week!

Due to an overload of chill songs stealing my heart right now, this entire week will be chill week!  Disregard the current schedule and instead get ready for 5 days of chill, funky, free, beautiful tracks (not all songs will meet all these criteria)!

First up is an incredible song from Felix Cartal.  A really unique combination of chill and pop, this Canadian really kicks it up a notch and brings an incredible track to the table.  A slight driving bass, truly great vocals, and just enough build to get you in the mood but still chill and relaxing.  Check it out below!

Second to the plate today is a really mind blowing chill Drum and Bass Song from Rootkit.  Taking DnB on its backside and showing us a side of it that rarely comes about, Rootkit delivers a really beautiful composition.  Great tonality, perfectly selected vocals, and just driving enough to get you into that DnB state of mind.  Enjoy and I will see you back here tomorrow!
