066 - Naughty Naughty Monday
I hope you all had a great weekend! I know that I did for sure, but it went way too fast as always. Back to monday, and back to the grind. OK. Mashup Monday is here to help with a chill track from Mashup-Germany. The group who is behind that ridiculous mashup I love to play all the time (the one with backstreet boys/phantom of the opera/Benni Benassi/Everybody Speaks Americano). This one is a much more chilled out track that combines the work of Krewella, Bastille, and Naughty Boy. A nice drop in the background and very chill vocals make for a really incredible piece of music. Enjoy it and I will see you tomorrow!

065 - Free Stuff All Over the Walls
Today I have decided to go a little off the walls and share two huge free musical opportunities that I have discovered in the last few days. It is the least I can do for all of the support and love reflected in the following of this blog.
First up! I hope you have heard of 3LAU (pronounced Blau) by this point, but even if you haven't, you will enjoy this mix. Since the last day of Electric Zoo in New York got cancelled, 3LAU had a big list of all the stuff he wanted to play but never got a chance to. So he mixed it anyway and is now releasing it for a free download. The set is roughly an hour with 48 songs mixed into a set that is just over an hour. For sure worth you time! I love stuff like this because when you look at the music breakdown by song, you can discover awesome tracks that you know already mix well together!
Second, we have an incredible house remix offered to listeners from ThisSongisSick, and they give away a lot of free music so following them is a no-brainer. This remix is a real dirty remix of what I would guess to be an indie dance song, and the whole thing is really incredible. Tchami does a really exceptional job and the song keeps things moving from start to finish and has a pretty unique drop. Check it out below!

064 - The World is Our Playground
If you listened to radio show frequently, you know that I am a sucker for progressive house. The build really speaks to me musically, and adding layer by layer really helps me to break down the song and really get completely enveloped by it. I stumbled on this song while catching up on at least of month of activity from This Song is Sick (a great website for new up-and-comers in hip hop and electronic), and I haven't been able to stop listening to it since. The lyrics are very well written, and the message they send is one of grave importance to the people of our generation: You can do anything you want, the world is your playground. This song really speaks to me and I honestly can not wait to mix with it when I have the money saved up for my mixer (hopefully in the next few weeks!). DJVice is for sure a DJ that I will be looking into for both his future and past work as I hope this song is reflective of his musical talent. I can easily see this making it to clubs and to raves, and if not then live sets that I perform in the near future! (none are set up yet but stay posted!)

Also, due to a request from a friend I have been asked to find the best remix of Ylvis "What does the Fox Say?". First of all let me applaud Ylvis, because the song did exactly what they wanted it to. Not only did they write the song as something horrible that they knew was horrible, but they produced it in a way that caught the attention of EVERYONE. The guys of Ylvis have a talk show in Sweden and this video and song were done in order to promote the song. Based on all the publicity the song has been getting, I would say that they did exactly what they set out to do. But let me say, I hate this song now. After listening to painful remix after painful remix, I finally stumbled upon one that was decent (mainly because it didn't have those damn noises in the chorus/drop). So Chris, you are welcome, but this song is forever removed from life after this. The remix is nothing spectacular, but its halfway decent (and apparently done in a very short period of time).

063 - Banger Don't Quit
I did have a rant planned for today, but I am going to save it for a more applicable song, but today I will talk about Big Room (and thank you Adin for mentioning it).
Roughly once a week I like to go to Beatport and listen to the top few songs on the charts. Over the summer I was sitting with my good friend (DJ XMFD) in his house doing just this. When we found the top tracks we were blown away. Don't get me wrong, the majority of the tracks were pretty good. Nice build up, somewhat decent progression, but then the drop came. GOOD LORD. Words can not describe my surprise to hear such a simplistic and lazy drop. My first though was, "this has to be a joke". There are different ways of mixing and performing for an audience based on the venue and the amount of people present and I was familiar with the genre of Big Room, but still, I looked at my friend like "what is this shit". We continued through the top 10 to find that at least 6 of the songs were Big Room. As we continued talking about it, we presented the idea that if you just replaced the drop with the drop from another song, then the entire track would be fixed. Sitting in a room with one other person and a speaker set, I was talking the truth. I did not even consider that this would be much better at a large venue with thousands of people surrounding me.
Since then I have a bit more respect for Big Room, because I have found a few songs that are good on the more individual level (such as "Epic"). However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and though I don't like to mix or listen to these songs now, I am guessing it is because my mind and performance experience (what little I have) is not fitting of this style. That doesn't at all mean that I condemn the entire genre, I have hope for it as I do with all electronic music.
I love being surprised by a song, hearing the first few seconds of it with my finger on the "skip" button, and then pulling my hand away with my jaw dropped at how dumb I was for almost missing such an incredible song. Drum and Bass really got me started into electro (Pendulum was the first group I knew by name), and this song reminds me of my beginnings so much that I honestly got a little nostalgic. Nice build and quite a surprising turn around after the introduction to the song, this is quickly becoming one my favorite songs, and one of my favorites to drive to. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

062 - Rant About Going Wrong
So I guess this is rant week.
Big songs can really come in all shapes and sizes. A huge bass isn’t necessary to make a
song a massive club banger that is necessary to make it popular. But then again on the other side, you
cant just throw an electro beat behind crappy vocals and bad lyrics and expect
it to be a number one track. Sadly
that is how top 40 seems to be going.
They assume that Miley Cyrus can be popular by making a song with the lyrical
intelligence of a dead horse. The
sad thing is, PEOPLE EAT IT UP.
True, there are some exceptions to this (I like Rihanna and Calvin
Harris together), but most are pure ear torture. It does depend on the electro artist as well, some seem to
get sucked into the game and will do music for anyone, People like Madeon are
doing it right. Overall, loving
the influx of electronic into pop and top 40, but it needs to be done the right
way.
ON THAT NOTE, this song is incredible. The stinger for me is the set of vocals
that send chills down your spine (which if you haven’t noticed is one of my
favorite aspects of house songs and electronic music). Armin Van Buuren is a big name and a
big player in this genre, yet it surprises me how many people haven’t heard of
him, or hear his name and instantly discount him as a nobody. He is a extremely gifted artist and
this remix of one of his own songs really speaks to me in the way that even if
a song isn’t perfect, you can always mix it again the second time around.

061 - Don't Ever Stop
Mondays are rough, for real. Before into today's song, I want to talk about something.
Over the weekend, my friend Chris challenged me to find a tolerable remix of "What the Fox Say" by Ylvis, which slowly caused me to loose both my sanity and my threshold for that song. I will likely post the song as an add on to either Tuesday's or Thursday's song because I would never subject you all to just that song, but that is not the point that I am looking to make. In my search, it blew me away how many people had taken one particular remix, and reposted it as their own, generally with few ( the only one that had a change was a small change in speed) to no changes. Are people really that desperate for attention that they are willing to steal someone's remix and claim it as their own? Say it gets big, and the community wants more...what then? steal more remixes from little known DJs? Lie your way to the top only to get called out by such an insignificant community that it doesn't matter? No one that I know has performed music theft to this degree (thank god) but this kind of activity really makes me sick. Music is all about taking your own twist on a song through a remix, not stealing another person's work. Thankfully the people of youtube and soundcloud have been putting these stolen remixes out in open through comments and the posters remain silent. I hope that this continues and that people who steal music and put their own name on it get weeded out and put on public display.
I may start a rant like this once a week, not sure when though. I have one about rap music too, not sure when I can get it down though.

060 - A Funky Way to the Weekend
Funky music is the best, it just makes you want to get up and dance (even if you have no moves, its ok, I don't have any either). In honor of the milestone this week, I decided to share one of my favorite funky/swing tracks. If you have ever heard of Goldfish, you know the kind of music that just gets something moving through your veins that cant really be explained. Its just a rush of good feelings, happiness, and a desire to do something, anything! This track is called One Million Views and is truly one of my favorite songs of this genre, also the video is pretty funny! Also it bashes just about every big/mainstream electronic artist (Deadmau5, Skrillex, Steve Aoki, Daft Punk, and countless more). Enjoy it everyone, and I will see you back here on Monday!
